The story opens with Samaria under siege. Samaria had been under siege beforehand about eight years before the story we consider in today’s talk. It had been the same enemy that had held the earlier siege. As Samaria had been under siege before we can imagine that the walls of the city were quite well developed. The siege of today’s story has been running a long time. In a siege the enemy stops food supply lines. No food can get into the city. Food is short in the city, everyone is hungry. Everyone is anguished.
